By Friday, January 31 – Request for Proposals to Counter White Christian Nationalism
Please submit specific proposals for how we can actively counter white Christian nationalism to Joe Agne (RevAgne@gmail.com) by Friday, January 31. Your submissions will be organized for consideration discussion on Sunday, February 2. Please consider what individuals, small groups, the whole church, and/or interfaith organizations might do. One way to move forward will be to share our work with the Social Justice Committee. Of course, participants in the study phase on this topic are welcome to be involved in the action stages.

What can I do? What can we do together as First UMC of Evanston. Please send ideas ahead (see above!) or bring additional ideas and proposals.
Sunday, February 9: A Climate Scientist’s Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World.
Leader: Judith Campbell, Earth Care
“Let’s talk about the elephant in the room, Climate Change
Most of us are aware of it.
Many of us worry about it.
We are all affected by it.
Few of us are talking about it.
We will talk about Climate Change. Actually we will first listen to Katharine Hayhoe, a renown climate scientist, as we watch her TED talk. She is also the author of Saving Us, A Climate Scientist’s Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World. This book is not a doomsday narrative about our Earth. “It is a multilayered look at science, faith and human psychology, as she leads us through hope to action”.
Judith Campbell and our Earth Care group will facilitate the conversation and include suggestions for action and reasons for rational hope from Katharine Hayhoe’s book. The book, “Saving Us,” is approachable to all and well worth your time.”
Sunday, February 16: Rainbows, Resistance, Reconciliation
We welcome Rev. Dr. Beth Stroud to facilitate a discussion on LGBTQIA+ justice and inclusion, and to share our stories and hopes for FUMC and the Church. Rev. Stroud underwent a trial 20 years ago in Pennsylvania in the United Methodist Church where her elders orders were revoked because of her committed relationship with another woman. Her credentials were reinstated in Eastern Pennsylvania after the 2024 UM General Conference.
Sunday, February 23: Part 2: Being an Upstander for LGBTQIA+ and “OTHERFOLX” A continuing conversation with Katie Brick.
Sunday, March 2: The Sandbox Revolution
FUMC children and Colin McDonald tell us how and why they do social justice work, especially by making sandwiches for homeless people.
