First Church’s Progressive Christianity Reading Group invites new and former participants to prepare as we reconvene for our fall reading term.
Meeting via Zoom on Thursdays at 1pm, we’ll begin September 8th with a stimulating discussion of Marcus Borg’s Jesus: Uncovering the Life, Teachings, and Relevance of a Religious Revolutionary. Participants can count on about 75 pages of reading a week for four weeks.
Check out these comments from one review:
“Americans are deeply divided about what it means to follow Jesus….Some oppose evolution…others defend it. Some oppose gay marriage, others support it. Some oppose abortion others defend a person’s right to choose. Borg takes us on a journey of discovery, arguing how we see Jesus affects how we think about these and other things and Borg offers us a perspective that could overcome our differences, focusing on both personal and political transformation.”
In October, we will encounter Rachel Held Evans’ Inspired: Slaying Giants, Walking on Water, and Loving the Bible Again. Here is an excerpt from one reviewer:
“Drawing on the best in recent scholarship and using her well-honed literary expertise, Evans examines some of her favorite Bible stories and possible interpretations, retelling them through memoir, poetry, short stories….. The Bible, she discovers,…is a living breathing, captivating and confounding book that is able to equip us to join God’s loving and redemptive work in the world.
Both books are available new and used online, in the local library, and one copy of each is available in the church office for your use.
