Meet Rev. Dr. Paul H. Lee

On Sunday, March 1, SPRC shared the following message about the appointment of a Senior Pastor to First Church Evanston:

Greetings in the name of Christ!

On behalf of Bishop Dan Schwerin of the Northern Illinois – Wisconsin Conference and the cabinet, it is with pleasure to announce to you the appointment of Rev. Dr. Paul Lee to the community of Evanston at Evanston First United Methodist Church, effective July 1, 2026.

The bishop and the cabinet are committed to this appointment for the following missional reasons:

  1. To lead in preaching the Word and creative Worship.
  2. To bring in the gifts of administration and organizational skills.
  3. To provide healing, pastoral care and reconciliation to the congregation and staff.
  4. To strengthen the connectional system by 100% apportionment giving to fulfill the mission of the United Methodist Church.

I’d like to share highlights about the diverse, meaningful context of Rev Lee’s ministry:

  • For over 25 years, Reverend Dr. Paul Lee has served in mission work South Africa and Zimbabwe, lectured at a theological seminary in India and served in congregational ministry in South Korea and the US;
  • Rev. Dr. Lee has learned that each community carries its own history, culture, and internal rhythm. His ministry therefore begins with attending carefully to how God is already at work among the people.
  • His call to ministry began early in his life and grew gradually. He understands that preaching, teaching, pastoral care, and justice belong together.
  • His theological formation began at Hanshin University in Osan, South Korea, a seminary deeply engaged in social justice and public theology. His ministry was further shaped through a second Master of Divinity at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry at Boston University. During three formative years as an intern at The Chicago Temple, he saw how liturgical depth, theological reflection, and public engagement sustain one another.
  • At Waterman United Methodist Church, southwest of Chicago, careful listening led Reverend Dr. Lee to a shared five-year aligned vision that resulted in steady growth and deepened trust. During a difficult time at Sterling Wesley United Methodist Church, Reverend Lee strengthened communication and helped restore steadiness.
  • Finally and importantly, Reverend Dr. Lee is grateful for his wife, Rosa, as they share the joys and commitments of ministry. Rev. Dr. Rosa Y. Lee, will be appointed to nearby Glenview United Methodist Church beginning July 1. Reverend Lee is also grateful for the new family puppy, Harry, who reminds him that leadership is ultimately about integrity and presence.

As we continue this season of transition, let’s join together as a beloved community with humility and confidence in God’s guidance.

SPRC and the Transition Team will continue to be in regular communication with the congregation as we journey through this time of transition together.
