Frequently Asked Questions
How are pastors assigned in the United Methodist Church?
In the United Methodist Church, pastors are appointed by the bishop each year, with appointments running from July through June. This system, known as itinerancy, dates back to John Wesley, the founder of Methodism.
In Wesley’s time, clergy called circuit riders traveled from community to community—often on horseback—preaching and providing pastoral care wherever it was needed. While pastors today typically serve one congregation, the same principle remains: pastors are appointed where their gifts best match the needs of the church.
The bishop makes appointments in consultation with the district superintendent and the church’s Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC), seeking the best fit for both the pastor and the congregation.
What has been the process of pastoral appointment for First Church?
Following Pastor Grace Imathiu’s decision to not request reappointment to FUMCE, our SPRC gathered input from the congregation to develop a church profile summarizing our ministries, strengths, and ways to grow. We shared this profile with Bishop Dan Schwerin in December 2025.
Bishop Schwerin then prayerfully considered who might best meet the needs and gifts of our church. He consulted with District Superintendent Victor Melad, conference district superintendents, the pastors involved, and then presented his choice to the SPRC in late February. The Rev. Dr. Paul Lee’s appointment was announced to the First Church’s congregation on March 1, 2026.
Now what happens? How can we help?
Worship, pastoral and congregational care, programs, events, and operations will continue under Pastor Britt’s leadership with the support of our staff and many congregational leaders.
Our SPRC and the Transition Team will work with District Superintendent Melad, Pastor Britt, staff, and church leaders to organize onboarding for Rev. Paul Lee.
Our congregation will host a celebration for Pastor Grace this spring and the onboarding for Rev. Paul will include welcome events starting in July 2026. To help with these events, please contact Jeanne-Marie Daly or Carol Barnett.
How can we prepare for this pastoral transition?
We encourage you to take part in worship, programs and events with an open and caring heart, to pray for all of our pastors, and to read daily devotions to reflect on and grow your own spiritual gifts.
