Wondering what you can do to help our planet in crisis? Take a look at these suggestions from your friends at the Earth Care committee:

1. Commit to composting. Decomposing food is one of the top sources of methane, a potent greenhouse gas the contributes to climate change. Instead of adding to the 33 million tons of food that goes to waste each year, create a compost bin in your yard or use the city of Evanston’s convenient program.

2. Eat your veggies. Your mom was right: fruits and vegetables are good for you AND the planet! Eating lower on the food chain by limiting meat and dairy in your diet generally results in fewer greenhouse gas emissions and requires less energy, land, and water.

3. Go native. Plants that evolved to thrive in your region will bring beauty to your yard or back porch while providing food and shelter for birds and insects. You’ll enjoy the company of more butterflies, hummingbirds, fireflies and other creatures! Native plants typically need less water too, and there’s no need for harmful pesticides or herbicides.

4. Reduce your reliance on fossil fuels.

           a. Car shopping? Consider an electric or hybrid model.

           b. Save energy at home by turning down the thermostat, swapping out incandescent bulbs for LEDs, choosing electric appliances, and more.

5. Vote for your planet. Supporting politicians with a commitment to fighting climate change is one of the most important things you can do. Help your voice be heard with these tips.

6. Gather with other First Church members on Feb. 9th to talk about what we can do about climate change individually and as a congregation. We’ll be meeting at 9:15 a.m. in the dining room. Hope to see you there! Questions? Reach out to Judith Campbell.
