Message from Rev. Jane Cheema:
I am grateful to our SPRC committee and Senior Pastor Grace Imathiu for their work in helping me navigate the past year and a half. Their support was shown in many ways and now in the gift of renewal leave early in 2022. I will be away from First Church from January 10- March 10, 2022.
The care and support from SPRC and Pastor Grace through my husband’s illness and death (especially as this was complicated by the pandemic) has helped me get through the first 18 months of this time of grief and new life. The result of this time has been overwhelming exhaustion and a sense of burnout that has been hard to shake.
My goal for this Renewal Leave is to have time and space away from the daily and weekly demands of ministry. During this time I hope to spend more intentional family time and study time to seek renewed energy for ministry and for leadership in this congregation. My plans are shifting as the pandemic shifts but am hoping to spend a lot of time outdoors exploring Forest Preserves, State Parks and perhaps take an epic Road Trip. Resting, reading, journaling are all waiting for me.
This definition of Renewal Leave is what I am hoping to experience:
…time for travel, rest, prayer, and the broadening of one’s sense of God’s work in the world—a time to pause, step back, and behold God and creation from a new perspective. Nourishing one’s soul and discovering a new perspective calls for both a change of pace and a change of location.
More intentional than simply taking a break, the sabbatical consists of more than just a vacation. This is a time for the pastor to distance self from the demands of leadership, to gain fresh vision and energy—a time to focus on comprehensive renewing and reequipping for long-term ministry.
