SUMMARY:Lent Contemplative Prayer Group
DESCRIPTION:Lent Contemplative Prayer Group In the 1960s\, the well-known Trappist monk\, Thomas Merton\, brought contemplative practice out of the cloister into the realm of ordinary people. In the 1970s\, Father Thomas Keating developed a form of contemplative practice called centering prayer; and John Main\, a Benedictine monk\, advocated a practice of contemplative meditation. We will be utilizing the small group format for contemplative practice outlined in the book “Where Two or Three Are Gathered” by Rev. Daniel Prechtel with an emphasis on lectio (reading)\, meditatio (meditation)\, oratio (prayer)\, and contemplatio (contemplation). The contemplative practice group will meet on Mondays\, March 10th – April 14th during Lent\, from 10:30am-11:30am on zoom and will be facilitated by Glynis Doyle and Maryellen Scott. DESCRIPTION:Compline Night Prayer Services Return\nOn Tuesdays beginning January 7th\, you are invited to a thirty minute Night Prayer Service to end your day in community and peace. These services from 8:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.\, available via Zoom\, are patterned after the ancient monastic tradition of Compline (meaning completion)–the final prayer of the day. We will follow a simple liturgical format for this service of quietness and reflection before rest. Persons of all ages are encouraged to give this spiritual practice a try. DESCRIPTION:The Progressive Christianity Reading Group kicks off the new year on Sept. 5 at 1:00pm with its weekly one-hour Zoom gathering. “Reading Genesis” by Marilynne Robinson is our first selection. It may be found at online booksellers as well as the Evanston Library. \nRobinson offers these words on the topic: \n“The book of Genesis has been treated by scholars as a collection of documents by many hands\, expressing different factional interests\, with borrowings from other ancient literatures\, marking the text as derivative. In other words\, academic interpretation of Genesis has centered on the question of its basic coherency\, just as fundamentalist interpretation has centered on the question of the appropriateness of reading it as literally true.\nBoth of these approaches preclude an appreciation of its greatness as literature\, its rich articulation and exploration of themes that resonate through the whole of Scripture. “Reading Genesis” includes the full text of the King James Version of the book… is a powerful consideration of the profound meanings and promise of God’s enduring covenant with humanity. DESCRIPTION:First Church’s Progressive Christians Reading Group invites new and former participants to participate this fall as the group resumes reading and discussion of selected books. \nThe first selection is Freeing Jesus: Rediscovering Jesus as Friend\, Teacher\, Savior\, Lord\, Way\, and Presence by Diana Butler Bass. This group gathers online Thursdays\, 1:00-2:15pm\, beginning Sept. 7. \nHow can you still be a Christian? This is the most common question Diana Butler Bass is asked today. It is a question that many believers ponder as they wrestle with disappointment and disillusionment in their church and its leadership. But while many Christians have left their churches\, they cannot leave their faith behind.  \nIn Freeing Jesus Bass challenges the idea that Jesus can only be understood in static\, one-dimensional ways and asks us to instead consider a life where Jesus grows with us and helps us through life’s challenges in several capacities: as Friend\, Teacher\, Savior\, Lord\, Way\, and Presence.  Freeing Jesus is an invitation to leave the religious wars behind and rediscover Jesus in all his many manifestations\, to experience Jesus beyond the narrow confines we have built around him.
