DESCRIPTION:Join us for summer worship at our 9:00 am outdoor service or the 10:30 am service in Tittle Chapel. This summer\, our two services will be very distinct in format. 9:00 am will be conversational and reflection focused. 10:30 am will look more traditional with a sermon. \nOur first sermon series will begin on June 9th and we invite you to join us!\nDuring the month of June we will focus on questions that begin with “I’ve been meaning to ask…”\nIn essence\, this question also implies the following statements: “I’ve been thinking about you and I’ve been wanting to check in… You’ve been on my mind… I haven’t known how to have this conversation\, but I’m getting started with a question.” \nThe ellipses symbolize the main objective of this series: to cultivate courageous conversations—and to keep having them\, even if we need to pause. And provide us a starting point to ask questions such as: “where are you from?” “where does it hurt?” and “what do you need?” \nThese weekly sub-themes provide a trajectory for going deeper. As you can see\, these questions aren’t surface level; they invite us to share our pain and seek ways to care for one another. May this series help us to behold each other as images of the divine. May it help us strengthen our capacity for empathy and compassion. May it remind us of the power of asking unassuming questions. May it show us that courage is rooted in the heart. Through vulnerability and authenticity\, may our courageous conversations lead us to glimpse hope\, joy\, and beauty—and to become the community God created us to be.

DESCRIPTION:The Progressive Christianity Reading Group kicks off the new year on Sept. 5 at 1:00pm with its weekly one-hour Zoom gathering. “Reading Genesis” by Marilynne Robinson is our first selection. It may be found at online booksellers as well as the Evanston Library. \nRobinson offers these words on the topic: \n“The book of Genesis has been treated by scholars as a collection of documents by many hands\, expressing different factional interests\, with borrowings from other ancient literatures\, marking the text as derivative. In other words\, academic interpretation of Genesis has centered on the question of its basic coherency\, just as fundamentalist interpretation has centered on the question of the appropriateness of reading it as literally true.\nBoth of these approaches preclude an appreciation of its greatness as literature\, its rich articulation and exploration of themes that resonate through the whole of Scripture. “Reading Genesis” includes the full text of the King James Version of the book… is a powerful consideration of the profound meanings and promise of God’s enduring covenant with humanity. DESCRIPTION:Our new program year at First Church begins on Rally Day Sunday\, Sept. 8! \n9:15am Christian Education for adults\, youth\, and children\n10:30am Worship in the Sanctuary with children’s processional\n10:45am Children’s Chapel and Connect 456\nCommunity Hour with ice cream on the church lawn after worship. \nChurch Council has chosen “Collaboration\, Connection and Care” as the theme for 2024-25 and proposed a focus on Goals IV (Action for Justice) and V (Collaborative Leadership) of the current strategic plan into next summer. By expanding that plan for one additional year\, we have additional time to reflect on the outcomes of the 2024 General Conference and develop the next strategic plan.
