More information below.\nThe Third Day: Living the Resurrection\nMarch 9-Holy Week\nEach spring\, our church chooses a common book which everyone is invited to read. This year\, our book is Tom Berlin’s The Third Day. Dedicated teachers offer classes on various days and times during the week\, both in-person and via Zoom. \nTo guide us on our journey of reflection and preparation\, Tom Berlin’s book puts the devastating experience of Jesus’ followers after the Crucifixion. When it appeared to them that Jesus was dead\, they all faced despair. But when Jesus reappears\, they take new hope and move forward to launch a world-wide movement. In addition to exploring the biblical characters’ feelings\, the author interlaces contemporary stories of people facing hopelessness and despair and finding renewal in Christ. It offers inspiration to us in our own trying times. The book is available at the church office for $10.00 per copy or through Realm. Please email class teachers for Zoom information.

DESCRIPTION:Ever had doubts? If you are like most\, you have. Ever had doubts about Christian faith? Many of us have. In a recent study at a leading United Methodist Church\, 95 percent of believers stated they struggle with doubt occasionally and 24 percent stated they struggle with doubt regularly. This same study also found that 44 percent believed their doubts helped them find or strengthen their faith. \nBeginning on January 5\, The Christian Experiment will discuss doubts. These doubts could be yours or someone you know. We will use some of Adam Hamilton’s work on doubt to help our discussions. DESCRIPTION:Compline Night Prayer Services Return\nOn Tuesdays beginning January 7th\, you are invited to a thirty minute Night Prayer Service to end your day in community and peace. These services from 8:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.\, available via Zoom\, are patterned after the ancient monastic tradition of Compline (meaning completion)–the final prayer of the day. We will follow a simple liturgical format for this service of quietness and reflection before rest. Persons of all ages are encouraged to give this spiritual practice a try. DESCRIPTION:The Earth Care Committee holds its monthly Styrofoam collection time at First UMC Evanston on the third Saturday of the month at the Church Street entrance between 10am and Noon. Material to be collected includes all clean No. 6 plastic foam. Acceptable items include disposable coffee cups; take out containers (such as clamshells); plastic plates\, bowls and cutlery; meat and poultry foam trays and packing foam. When recycled\, these items can be processed into a material used to make park benches\, picture frames\, and other items. Recycling these items helps keep this harmful plastic\, which cannot be processed locally\, out of the waste stream.

DESCRIPTION:On January 19 during Adult Education time\, First Church will hear from Paul Botts\, executive director of The Wetlands Initiative\, about restoring marshes and other wetlands in our area. \nEven though we live beside the Great Lakes\, the greatest freshwater bodies in the world\, clean water is a precious resource. We all need to reduce our use to save clean water in a warming environment. Here are some tips to reduce your water use at home: \n• First\, take shorter showers and turn off the tap while brushing your teeth. Small changes like these add up! \n• Save and reuse water when running your faucet to get hot water. You can use this for watering plants\, for example. \n• Attach a rain barrel to your downspout and collect rainwater to use for watering outdoor plants. (Be sure the top of the barrel has a tight mesh screen over the opening to prevent mosquitoes from breeding there.) \n• Replace faucets and shower heads with low flow versions. New\, water efficient toilets also use much less water than older ones. \n• Run your washing machine only when you have a full load. \n• Maintain your appliances. Check for and repair any water leaks. \nSmall changes at home can help our region retain precious fresh water. DESCRIPTION:Looking for a place to continue growing in your understanding of environmental justice and how to care for God’s creation? \nVisit the Earth Care Lending Library\, which is open every 2nd Sunday after worship in Great Hall. A small lending library with books for readers of all ages\, the titles were curated by the Earth Care Committee and include Newbery Award-winning children’s  books\, as well as titles by leading voices from the spiritual and scientific communities.
