DESCRIPTION:Compline Night Prayer Services Return\nOn Tuesdays beginning January 7th\, you are invited to a thirty minute Night Prayer Service to end your day in community and peace. These services from 8:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.\, available via Zoom\, are patterned after the ancient monastic tradition of Compline (meaning completion)–the final prayer of the day. We will follow a simple liturgical format for this service of quietness and reflection before rest. Persons of all ages are encouraged to give this spiritual practice a try. DESCRIPTION:A Celebration of our Intersectional Pride \nIn the month of our 11th Anniversary as a \nReconciling Ministry Network (RMN) Congregation \nBlack History Month \nFirst United Methodist Church of Evanston \nREGISTER HERE \n\nSaturday/Sunday\, February 15-16th\, 2025 \nFirst United Methodist Church in Evanston (FUMCE) is celebrating it’s eleventh anniversary as a reconciling congregation that seeks justice and dignity for all LGBTQIA+ persons. The event for February 15-16th is a time to revisit our commitment and move into the future in these difficult times. \nOur focus is on Intersectional pride and justice.  FUMCE is a welcoming Christian community of the United Methodist Church (UMC) that offers hospitality\, congregational care\, and fellowship to all. We embrace individuals and families of all gender identities\, sexual orientations\, ethnicities\, races\, and economic backgrounds.  We are a community of faith seeking the transformation of the world through Jesus’ courageous love. \nOn the 11th anniversary of joining the RMN fellowship\, we are celebrating this milestone with an event called “Rainbows\, Resistance and Reconciliation (R3)”.  Our desire is to bring the Reconciling community and prospective congregations in Evanston\, our district area and Conference together in the spirit of love and fellowship. \nThese types of events in Northern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church have not happened since before the beginning of the COVID epidemic. \nOn Saturday\, February 15th at the Anniversary Celebration we will welcome a national speaker. There will be local clergy and lay leaders participating in a panel on “What Next post UM General Conference and post Election 2024”\, Rev. Dr. Pamela Lightsey is the preacher for the Anniversary Worship Service on Sunday\, February 16\, and will lead us in reflections on what is to come as we move forward together. There will be workshops focusing on various topics\, including intersectional justice\, queer and trans issues\, being allies and biblical interpretation that heals not harms. \nIn this event we seek to: \n\nProvide opportunities for healing and hope:  Build Community\nVision faithful movement forward. Strategize about what people and churches need for this work.\nIdentify ambassadors for LGBTQIA+ justice and advocacy (as RMN names them)\nAddress issues facing us now like ongoing prejudice and the many hateful laws restricting gender affirming care.\nStrategize to take action against violence inflicted on members of the community\,\, especially transgender folk\nAddress issues of mental health as relates to homophobic Christian teachings and societal attitudes and seek to reduce high suicide rates (ie mental health )\nEmbrace Queer folk who because of cultural structural context (color) may still feel a need  to be closeted\n\nPlease visit the event site for more details.

DESCRIPTION:The Earth Care Committee holds its monthly Styrofoam collection time at First UMC Evanston on the third Saturday of the month at the Church Street entrance between 10am and Noon. Material to be collected includes all clean No. 6 plastic foam. Acceptable items include disposable coffee cups; take out containers (such as clamshells); plastic plates\, bowls and cutlery; meat and poultry foam trays and packing foam. When recycled\, these items can be processed into a material used to make park benches\, picture frames\, and other items. Recycling these items helps keep this harmful plastic\, which cannot be processed locally\, out of the waste stream.

In a recent study at a leading United Methodist Church\, 95 percent of believers stated they struggle with doubt occasionally and 24 percent stated they struggle with doubt regularly. This same study also found that 44 percent believed their doubts helped them find or strengthen their faith. \nBeginning on January 5\, The Christian Experiment will discuss doubts. These doubts could be yours or someone you know. We will use some of Adam Hamilton’s work on doubt to help our discussions. DESCRIPTION:Children’s Chapel seeks to excite and build confidence in children’s experience of worship and sense of belonging at First Church. Children ages three through 3rd grade are invited to experience the wonder of worship and joy of service in a lively\, child-friendly setting. Throughout the program year\, children take part in the seasons of the Christian year\, exploring rituals\, sacraments\, and songs of our worship tradition as well as hands-on aspects of our church mission that children might shape and help share the story of our faith.

A small lending library with books for readers of all ages\, the titles were curated by the Earth Care Committee and include Newbery Award-winning children’s  books\, as well as titles by leading voices from the spiritual and scientific communities.
